It's always "peak" season in Old Forge. In the heart of the Adirondacks, this town is a year-round playground. With over 500 miles of groomed trails and events like the annual Snodeo, it's called the
Snowmobile Capital of the East. Spring through fall, there's hiking, mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides at
McCauley Mountain. You can go whitewater rafting on the Moose River with
Adirondack River Outfitters, or ride the flumes and slides at
Enchanted Forest/Water Safari.
For a calmer trip downstream, rent a kayak from
Tickner's. They can even arrange a ride back to town on the
Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Check out Main Street's specialty shops and cafes. If you just want to relax, take a sightseeing cruise with
Old Forge Lake Cruises. In autumn, you'll see spectacular foliage. Stay at a Victorian inn like
Van Auken's or the
North Woods Inn, where you can sit back and watch for loons on the lake.
