Explorers and adventurers will get their thrills in Greater Niagara. This region of western New York borders two Great Lakes (Lake Ontario and Lake Erie) and has long attracted people who dream big, from anti-slavery firebrands to industrialists seeking to harness the power of the mighty Niagara River. And of course, there's Niagara Falls.
Once you've experienced it, you'll see why Niagara Falls is one of the world's best known natural wonders. Stand in awe as you watch millions of gallons of water cascade over 170-foot cliffs every few seconds. But don't stop your tour of nature there. Go hiking or camping at any of the scenic parks in the region. With its historic lighthouse and views of Lake Ontario, Golden Hill State Park was named one of Reserve America's top outdoor locations. Evangola State Park's sandy, crescent-shaped beach on Lake Erie helped it earn a reputation as a top campground. Letchworth State Park, the “Grand Canyon of the East,” inspires the visitor with its 600 foot deep gorge and waterfalls.
The hydraulic power of mighty rivers gave rise to cities and towns in Greater Niagara. Buffalo is a living architecture museum full of history and culture. Explore historical masterpieces like Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin House or modern art at the Albright-Knox Gallery. For some culture you can sink your teeth into, stop by the Anchor Bar, the original home of Buffalo wings. Other places to try regional food and wine include Broadway Market, Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, and Hurd Orchards.
Outside of Buffalo, you'll also find plenty to see and do. Historic Lewiston played a part in the nation's military history. There, you'll find streets lined with beautiful historic homes. Experience nineteenth-century Niagara frontier life in a restored village at the Amherst Museum. Make friends with sea lions and penguins at the Aquarium of Niagara or head to Darien Lake Theme Park and Resort for amusement park thrills. Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel is the place to go for entertainment, good food and many kinds of casino games.
During the winter, Greater Niagara doesn't hibernate. You'll find skiing, snowmobiling, and winter sports all over the region. The Buffalo Ski Club has trails for both beginners and experts. Along with skiing, the ski area Kissing Bridge is a haven for snowtubing.
