Beside the Hudson River, in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, the village of
Catskill is a gateway to
The Catskills region. Discover its country charm, just two hours north of New York City by car or train.
Visitors are attracted by the same views that made Henry Hudson anchor his ship in this area in 1609. Beautiful landscapes here inspired 19th-century artist Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School. From the porch of his home at Cedar Grove, now called the
Thomas Cole National Historic Site, you can see the mountain scenery he painted.
Overlooking the Hudson River and Catskill Creek, the
Historic Catskill Point Museum hosts a weekly Farmers Market as well as concerts and music festivals. The picturesque park also has public boat docks, a large restored warehouse for special events, and a launch site for kayaks.
Catskill offers great restaurants, shopping and antiquing at a relaxed pace on Main Street. In the 1890s it was lined with elegant brick buildings with ornate facades. Classic Victorian homes built by prosperous merchants dotted the hillsides. Today, many of these buildings have been lovingly restored by artists and writers. Historic inns include the lovely
Caleb Street's Inn.
You'll find two major ski slopes and a state park within a 20-minute drive from the Village. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and wild forest preserves, the area boasts many hiking trails, and boating and fishing on the Hudson River. Historic sites and cultural activities abound.
