The Catskill Mountain town of Hunter is best known for
Hunter Mountain, one of the premier ski resorts in the East. Just two hours north of
New York City, this four-season destination also offers fantastic hiking, mountain biking, and zipline canopy tours in spring, summer and fall. Another “highlight,” the Hunter Mountain Skyride whisks visitors to a height of 3,200 feet for spectacular views.
Hunter Mountain’s
Kaatskill Mountain Club features a full-service spa, a fly fishing school, and a heated outdoor pool that’s open year-round. Charming country inns in Hunter include the Victorian
Fairlawn Inn and
Scribner Hollow Lodge, an architectural treasure offering fine dining along with breathtaking scenery. Nearby,
North-South Lake State Campground, one of the biggest in the
Catskill Forest Preserve, is popular for
hiking,
fishing,
kayaking and canoeing.
The town of Hunter includes two villages. In the village of Hunter, the
Kaaterskill Fine Arts Gallery exhibits works by regional artists, and the
Catskill Mountain Foundation presents music, theater and dance programs year round. Main Street in the village of
Tannersville is lined with antique shops, boutiques and restaurants. The Last Chance Antiques and Cheese Cafe has over 300 beers, 100 kinds of cheese, and a huge selection of old-fashioned candy. In Tannersville’s
Mountain Top Arboretum, you can stroll amid native trees and wildflowers as well as exotic plants from around the world. East of the village, a trail leads to
Kaaterskill Falls, a 260-foot cascade that has inspired generations of poets and painters.
Hunter Mountain’s full calendar of events includes TAP New York, a springtime festival that features specialty foods and microbrews from more than 30 New York craft breweries, and in August, the
International Celtic Festival highlights the music and traditions of the Emerald Isles. Every fall, an
Oktoberfest celebrates the harvest in old-world German style.
For some nostalgic Americana entertainment, take in a double feature at the
Hunter Mountain Drive-In Theatre.
