Locals call it "The End." Montauk sits at the easternmost tip of Long Island, just about 100 miles from Manhattan. Along with the white sand beaches, resorts and spas, the views rank among the finest in the world. Some say the best is from the top of
Montauk Point Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington in 1792 and still active as a guide to modern-day ships.
One of Montauk's five state parks,
Montauk Point also offers some of the world's best surf fishing. Find a good spot to cast your line and then wait with the sea birds overhead. You can play on a championship golf course at
Montauk Downs and camp right on the ocean at
Hither Hills.
If you prefer more luxury with your view, try one of the local inns like
Gurney’s or the Montauk Yacht Club. You don't need a yacht to stay there. It's a public resort that just feels like a private club. For a rugged hilltop perspective, take a wagon tour or saddle up for a ride on the beach at
Deep Hollow Ranch. This 350-year-old working cattle ranch is the birthplace of the American cowboy.
