We often ask, “Does art imitate life or life imitate art?” In New York State, the answer is “Both!”
In New York State, art is life, inspiring and sustaining generations of artists from the early Native Americans to the Hudson River School masters, from the Ash Can School to the Abstract Expressionists, and countless others. A great exchange between the place, the creators, and the creations continues every day.
Fortunately for art lovers, the state provides an endless palate of opportunities to experience great works of art. New York City is home to the two largest museums in the nation, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, as well as countless “smaller” museums such as MOMA, the Guggenheim, and the Whitney.
The Hudson Valley, grand dame of muses, not only inspired the famed school that bears its name, it now houses some of the best collections of the artists’ works at Olana, Cedar Grove, and The Albany Institute of History and Art. Avant Garde artists find a home in the Hudson Valley, too, at the spectacular Dia Beacon, and outdoor sculptors shine at the Storm King Art Center.
Signature collections pull travelers from around the globe to several Upstate museums including the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, the Albright-Knox in Buffalo, and Corning’s famed Museum of Glass and surrounding Gaffer District galleries.
Discover new talent across the state as several cities host “Art Walks” on Fridays throughout the month. Galleries, restaurants and entertainment venues open their doors. Artists open their studios. It’s an endless celebration of muses!
