No other city but
Buffalo can claim such an intimate relationship with a chicken part. The city's famous for a lot of things, but what pops into your head when you hear it mentioned are probably these spicy, tasty wings.
With their fame, Buffalo wings seem like they've been around forever. Truth is, Buffalo wings were invented in 1964. That year,
Anchor Bar bartender Dominic Bellissimo asked his mother Teressa to cook up something for a group of ravenous friends arriving late at night. Looking around her kitchen, Teressa made do with what she had. She deep-fried chicken wings and then tossed them with vinegary cayenne hot sauce and butter. When people started coming to the bar for a taste of the wings, a tradition started.
Now, you'll find Buffalo wings all over the world, but the Anchor Bar owners insist theirs are the original and best. Every year there's also a National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo, featuring the Anchor Bar and many other
restaurants. If you're in town to experience it yourself, don't forget to drop the Buffalo from your order. Since you're already in Buffalo, you can just call them wings.
