Winter Sports

There's more to active winters in New York than downhill skiing alone. If you still want to play outside, try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. New York has thousands of miles of trails that let you explore nature all dressed in white. The Olympic Sports Complex at Lake Placid has over 31 miles of trails used during the 1980 Winter Olympics. For something really different there, hop on a bobsled with a pro driver and brakeman to careen down the Olympic track.

In some of the snowiest towns, such as Old Forge and Newcomb, you'll also find designated streets transformed to snowmobile thoroughfares in the winter. Rent your own and enjoy both the town and the wilderness in New York's State Parks. Maybe even stop by an icy lake and try your hand at ice fishing.

If you want to let gravity do all the work, try snow tubing. Western New York's largest tubing park is at Kissing Bridge. Tubby Tubes lets you take a break from black diamond runs in the Adirondacks. Or climb up a sledding hill and go tobogganing. You can also find many places to go ice-skating in New York. Just watch where you try out your triple lutz, okay?
