Galleries

With New York City as its epicenter, New York's art world stretches across the state. It's why, along with spectacular scenery that inspired the Hudson River art movement, you can see captivating artworks at thousands of galleries. You'll find works by both established and emerging artists at New York's many arts and crafts galleries, photography centers and experimental spaces.  

From storefront studios in Brooklyn to uptown galleries, New York City's art scene continues to make waves. The Chelsea neighborhood has emerged as a contemporary art hotbed, eclipsing Soho with high-profile galleries, such as Gagosian and Barbara Gladstone. You'll also find galleries all over the city, including up-and-coming spaces in Manhattan's Lower East Side and Brooklyn's Williamsburg and DUMBO neighborhoods.

The dramatic beauty of the Hudson Valley has drawn artists for generations. Galleries line the main streets of cities like Beacon and Hudson, now important centers for contemporary art. Historic Sugar Loaf's resident artists show their work in dozens of shops within strolling distance of restaurants and cafés.

Follow scenic routes to galleries in Catskill villages like Margaretville and Woodstock. Amid expansive gardens, the James Cox Gallery highlights both contemporary and historic works by the famed Woodstock Art Colony. See the works of contemporary photographers at the Center for Photography.

In the Adirondacks, towns like Jay, Keene, and Wilmington feature regional art and craft galleries. You can see the works of 14 local artists at the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery at Saranac Lake. Lake George Arts Project presents regional and national artists, as well as summer concerts.

Big Orbit Gallery in Buffalo showcases local avant-garde visual artworks, as well as sound art and multimedia exhibits. CEPA Gallery is a must-visit for photography aficionados. Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery features renowned art spanning 5,000 years. Nearby, the Center at High Falls Gallery highlights local art in an historic neighborhood beside a 96-foot waterfall. Portage Hill Gallery, one of Chautauqua-Allegheny's largest collections, exhibits over 80 regional artists.
