Hunting in New York State: Fact Sheet

Adirondacks

Capital Saratoga

Following are two popular locations for hunting in the region:

  • Partridge Run Wildlife Management Area (WMA), consists of about 4,500 acres of upland and wetland habitat in Berne, Albany County. It provides a wide variety of outdoor recreation activities including hunting, trapping, fishing, birding, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing and horseback riding.
  • Albany Pine Bush Preserve: Located in the heart of the Capital District Region, the Albany Pine Bush is one of the best remaining examples of an inland Pine Barrens ecosystem in the world, proving a special habitat for many plants and animals.  This gently rolling sand plain is home to a unique diversity of rare animals and plants, including 45 wildlife Species of Greatest Conservation Need in New York State. It also provides non-motorized recreational opportunities including hunting, bird watching, hiking, jogging, nature study, cross-country skiing, horseback riding and mountain biking.

Catskills

Sundown Wild Forest, Catskill Park: The 30,100-acre Sundown Wild Forest in the Sullivan County Town of Neversink and the Ulster County Towns of Denning, Rochester, Wawarsing and Olive, covers a large swath of the southeast Catskills, including several ridges and 10 mountains over 2,000 feet. The area has a varied topography and an impressive mix of natural features - mountains, waterfalls, valleys and rivers - rich with hunting opportunities, fishable trout streams, hiking destinations and snowmobile trails. Key places to visit in the Wild Forest are the Kanape Valley and Ashokan High Point, Vernooy Kill Falls, Denman Mountain, Red Hill Fire Tower and the Peekamoose Valley.

Central New York

Chautauqua- Allegheny

Private preserves and game farms are found throughout the region. Some state lands are open for hunting during the appropriate seasons. Find license and other information at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7844.html  Guide services can make it easier to enjoy hunting in the region, for example:

Western New York Guide Service:  Specializes in guide service for hunting and fishing trips. This is the top Spring Turkey producing county in New York State. Chase whitetail deer, enjoy some of the best waterfowl action in the Northeast, pursue rabbits and up-land game in farm land rich country. Location: Beimus Point, NY.

Finger Lakes

Whispering Pines Hideaway: A shooting preserve  in Lyons that provides a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities including Pheasant, Chukar, Quail and Duck preserve shooting as well as wild duck and goose hunting opportunities.

Greater Niagara

Private preserves and game farms are found throughout the region. The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, located between Buffalo and Rochester, allows hunting and fishing in season with permits. State lands are open for hunting during the appropriate seasons.

Hudson Valley

Although most famous for antique hunting, the Hudson Valley also has several hunting preserves and sporting clays, hunting guide services, and state parks and forests open for hunting turkey, large and small game, and coyote during the appropriate seasons. Following are two of the many locations in the region to enjoy hunting:

  • Orvis Sandanona Shooting Grounds: Located  in Millbrook, a place where the traditions of the field and the hunt are held in the highest regard, this is the oldest permitted shotgun shooting club in the nation. The main lodge was built during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson and using its richly textured past as a foundation, Orvis Sandanona has created a thriving, modern sporting clays shooting ground that’s regularly ranked among the best in the country. Sandanona is open 363 days a year and has a very large pro shop.
  • Sterling Forest State Park comprises 21,935.08 acres of nearly pristine natural refuge amidst of one of the nation's most densely populated areas, a remarkable piece of woodland, a watershed for millions, and a tremendous outdoor recreation area. This unbroken deep-forest habitat is important for the survival of many resident and migratory species, including black bear, a variety of hawks and songbirds and many rare invertebrates and plants. Hunting, fishing and hiking opportunities are available.

Thousand Islands-Seaway
