The big news at Windham Mountain— a Catskills resort that’s just a short shush from NYC or Albany—is a multimillion- dollar makeover. Included are a new Competition Center for alpine, freestyle and snowboarding; a sideby- side racing zipline in the resort’s Adventure Park; renovations to the base lodge and the Club at Windham Mountain; and new state-of-the-art snowmaking guns. As general manager, Tim Woods says, “Snow quality is at the core of Windham Mountain’s premier alpine lifestyle.”

At Hunter Mountain, also in the Catskills, the state’s first six-passenger ski lift, the Kaatskill Flyer, gets you to top even faster. Other lift upgrades include a new high-speed quad chairlift on the West Side. For a spectacular bird’s eye view try the new zipline, the longest and highest in North America.

Greek Peak’s new Adventure Center tops the headlines at this popular Finger Lakes resort. Step into the Virtusphere, for a unique virtual reality adventure, or ride the wild Nor-easter Mountain Coaster, a hybrid of an alpine slide and a roller coaster, for an exciting descent through the forest. Thrill seekers note: other new adventure activities include ziplines, an aerial challenge course and a ropes course.

Just south of Syracuse, Labrador Mountain will leave you panting for more. Along with 22 trails covering 250 acres and 700 vertical feet, and a run that’s nearly a mile long, this year brings snowmaking upgrades, a remodeled ski shop, and a new updated drive for the Ptarmigan lift. The ski and snowboard rental selection is expanding for seasoned skiers and students alike.

Thrill-seeking tubers in the Greater Niagara region will love love love the news from the giant downhill tubing park adjacent to Kissing Bridge. The Colden Tubing Company’s new covered magic carpet lift is set to open December 24, speeding snowtubers up the hill and reducing the time between runs. You can sail up to the summit and then slide down to the valley floor 10 stories below, again and again. All you have to do is sit down and hang on! Out west at HoliMont Resort in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region, the Snowcats have just been fitted with hi-tech GPS systems to measure snow depth and deliver a super-even base for skiers. Crews have also been hard at work creating some exciting new features and clearing trees to make the mountain‘s glades even more fun and accessible.

Holiday Valley, another great resort in Ellicottville, has invested $5 million in improvements that include a new quad chairlift to double lift capacity and offer ski-in access to the SnowPine Village condominiums. Add to that automated snowmaking on the milelong Mardi Gras slope. The new Sky High Adventure Park features a Mountain Coaster that will take you on a thrilling path down the mountain. Hold on tight but don’t worry about getting carried away; brakes on the car let riders control the speed.
