Hanford Mills Museum

FEATURED
Details

An official Path Through History Site! The Hanford Mills Museum features an authentic water- and steam-powered sawmill with a 1926 Fitz Overshot Waterwheel, restored water turbine, and vintage woodworking machines. Guided tours feature demonstrations of the sawmill, gristmill, and woodworking shop. Visitors can watch as the working mill turns logs into lumber, crates, tub covers, and more. The museum's 70-acre site also contains 15 other historic structures including the John Hanford farmhouse, a hardware store, feed mill, and woodworking shop. The gift shop features mill-made items and local products. The museum, listed on the National and New York State Register of Historic Places, is open mid-May to mid-October (Wednesdays-Sundays) and also for special events, like the Ice Harvest Festival held the first Saturday in February. Other festivals include the Independence Day Celebration, the Dan Rion Memorial Antique Engine Jamboree & Powerfest in September, and the Woodsmen's Festival in October. Family Saturdays are held during the spring and summer on select Saturdays. The mission of Hanford Mills Museum is to inspire audiences of all ages to explore connections between energy, technology, natural resources, and entrepreneurship in rural communities with a focus on sustainable choices.
