Heron Hill's winemaking mission is to produce cool-climate wines that reflect the Finger Lakes region and pair well with food. Why? Because wines produced in the Finger Lakes with locally grown grapes, have certain characteristics that you won't find in wines anywhere else.
"We want people to come with an open mind," says Heron Hill's Erin Rafalowski. "Try a variety of wines, consider not only how much you enjoy the wines, but how each one will pair with food.
In addition to their award-winning Rieslings – they produce at least six styles or more in a given year – Heron Hill is known for its red and white Eclipse blends, which are celebrating 25 years of production in 2016. The Eclipse Red is a medium -bodied, dry red blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that has been aged 14 months and pairs well with food. Grapes for their Ingle Vineyards wines are grown right on location, using sustainable and nature-friendly vinicultural practices.
Named one of the "most spectacular tasting rooms in the world," by Travel & Leisure Magazine, this is one part of the experience you won't want to miss. Despite the grand reputation, the tasting bar's atmosphere aims to be part casual, part educational. If this is your first-ever wine tasting or you're a wine connoisseur, Heron Hill's friendly staff caters to your level of knowledge, and you can sample NY craft beers, cider and spirits from local distilleries, too.
WHAT YOU'LL FIND
Plan to slow down a bit and enjoy the views while you are here. You can try samples, or buy a full bottle or a glass from the tasting bar and find a spot on the winery's picnic tables or terraces. There's a gift shop and tasting room that are both open year-round, and a café that is open May through October. If you stop by in the summertime, there's a good chance you'll also catch some live music.
Heron Hill has won national acclaim almost every year since the early 2000's when its Ingle Vineyard Riesling won the San Francisco International Wine Competition for Best in Show, White Wine. Most recently, the Ingle Vineyard Riesling 2012 scored 91 points from Wine Enthusiast, and their Classic Dry Riesling 2012 was featured on the cover of Wine & Spirits Magazine as a best buy, scoring 92 points.
