John Burroughs' Slabsides and Nature Sanctuary

Details

An official Path Through History Site! Pioneering nature writer John Burroughs built this rustic cabin in 1895 as a retreat from his nearby Hudson River-fronted home. It was here that the literary naturalist created some of his best-known essays. His nearly 400 essays in all, written over six decades and published in 27 books, profoundly impacted both literature and the environmental movement. The one-room cabin interior, visible through the porch windows when cabin is not open, includes Burroughs' personal possessions and the furniture he built, and appears as it did when he welcomed such friends as President Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, and Henry Ford over a Century ago. The 197-acre preserve also boasts winding nature trails where Burroughs hiked with Walt Whitman.
