Teatown Lake Reservation

Details

An official Path Through History Site! The name Teatown dates back to 1776 when tea was scarce due to British taxation. A man named John Arthur moved to the northern Westchester area hoarding a chest full of tea with thoughts of selling it at huge profit. A group of women called Daughters of Eve found out about the tea and demanded Mr. Arthur sell the tea at a reasonable fee. After refusing, the women laid siege to the farmhouse. Mr. Arthur finally agreed to sell the tea at a fair price in exchange for a peaceful withdrawal. Hence, the area became known as "Teatown." Today, Teatown Lake Reservation is a nonprofit, environmental education center and nature preserve impacting 20,000 adults and children through its environmental education programs each year. Teatown manages 1,000 acres of land and 15 miles of hiking trails and is home to birds of prey and native animal habitats. Teatown organizes community programs and special events such as Teatown’s Hudson River EagleFest. Take a tour April-Sept on Wildflower Island, a two-acre garden island brimming with over 230 native and endangered species of wildflowers. Surrounded by water on all sides, the Island is home to a diverse range of flora that are able to grow undisturbed by mainland animals or activities. Teatown's Nature Center is open daily, 9:00 am-5:00 pm. Hiking trails are open daily dawn-dusk. Teatown Lake Reservation’s mission is to inspire our community to lifelong environmental stewardship.
