Theatre for a New Audience is an Off-Broadway, not-for-profit producer of Shakespeare and classic drama, founded in 1979 by Jeffrey Horowitz. Its mission is to develop and vitalize the performance and study of Shakespeare and classic drama. Through its bold, text-based productions, the Theatre broadens cultural literacy and engages diverse audiences in masterworks that offer context and perspective to current events and contemporary life. Intrinsic to this mission are the Theatre’s arts in education programs – the largest in-depth residencies to introduce Shakespeare and classic drama in the New York City Public Schools – and its expanding Humanities and audience engagement programs. In its 34-year history, the Theatre has built an international reputation for artistic excellence, with productions that have consistently earned prestigious nominations and awards, including the Drama Desk, OBIE, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Tony.
