Auburn to Corning

Waterfalls, Wine & Western Art

DAY 1

Start your tour with a visit to 'History's Hometown', Auburn.  

Visit the Harriet Tubman Home, built by Tubman for the aged after helping slaves escape to freedom on the Underground Railroad.  The Seward House Museum is the former residence of William H. Seward, best known for his work to purchase Alaska, then known as 'Seward's Folly.'  The Case Research Lab, where 'talkies' were invented, and the Tiffany interior at the Willard Memorial Chapel are not to be missed. Consider an evening out at Auburn Public Theater offering the highest quality live theatre, comedy, music, dance and film.

DAY 2

From Auburn, take Rte 20 west, to Rte 326 south to Route 90, the Cayuga Lakes Scenic Byway, south to Aurora. You'll find many interesting places to visit along the way, including perhaps spending a day at MacKenzie-Childs, a tranquil Victorian farm in Aurora overlooking the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake. Located just off Rte 90, they produce world-renowned majolica tableware, home furnishings and more. Head south on Rte 90 to the town of King Ferry and King Ferry Winery, where vinifera grapes are selectively picked to produce extremely complex, full-flavored wines. 

DAY 3

Head south along Rte 34B to Rte 34 into the city of Ithaca. Take in the downtown Commons, towering Ithaca Falls, lush gorges and endless panoramic views at nearby Buttermilk Falls and Robert H Treman state parks.  

Follow Rte 89 on the west side of Cayuga Lake to Trumansburg's Taughannock Falls State Park with beautiful hiking trails and a spectacular 215-ft waterfall that plunges through a rock amphitheater.

Stay overnight at a local hotel, or completely indulge your mind, nuture your body, and revitalize your spirit at La Tourelle Resort & August Moon(800/765-1492). They offer personalized spa treatments, cultural and adventure experiences, guest rooms, and "farm to table" Finger Lakes cuisine at The Bistro. 

DAY 4

Head south on Rte 13 to Elmira and the Harris Hill Soaring Center. Here you can enjoy the strikingly scenic Chemung Valley from the top of Harris Hill or onboard a motorless glider piloted by a FAA-certified pilot.

Take I-86/Rte 17 west to Corning to visit the Corning Museum of Glass, the world's largest glass museum. Check out the museum's history of glass artistry exhibits and live glassblowing demonstrations. Shop the GlassMarket or create your own glass artistry at the Make Your Own Glass show. You can even make your own glass pumpkin. Take advantage of the free parking and take the free shuttle bus to the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, home to one of the largest collections of American Western and Native American art in the Eastern United States. The museum's Trading Post offers unique gift ideas. 

Day 5

Continue on Rte 86 to Rte 390N to visit the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park. Approximately 90 miles from Corning, this magnificent state park boasts three thundering waterfalls and scenic magnificence along the mighty Genesee River. The main entrance of the park is located in historic Mount Morris where you'll find a major renaissance of shops, restaurants and the arts, including the New Deal Gallery which houses one of the largest collections of art created during our Nation's Great Depression outside of The Smithsonian Institution. It is an amazing tribute to our ‘Greatest Generation.
