For a great Adirondack adventure, follow Rte 30 north as it carves through the core of the Adirondack Mountains. Begin with a tour of the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake where 22 modern exhibition galleries and historic buildings contain collections and programs detailing life, work and play in the Adirondack Park. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities for kids, too.
Head north on Rte 30 to The W!ld Center in Tupper Lake. Its hands-on exhibits and shows reveal river otters, rare native trout and other shy local residents. Afterwards, stay overnight in Tupper Lake at a great B&B, cabin, lakeside cottage or motel.
"Get lost" at the Tucker's Farm on Route 86 in Gabriels -- make sure you explore their Great Adirondack Corn Maze and stock up on TuckerTaters. After your tour of the farm, continue your leisurely drive to the town of Malone as you enjoy the autumn colors on Rte 30, a designated Scenic Byway. There are many choices for overnight stays in Malone.
Begin your day shopping at The Market Barn (518/483-9341) in Malone, a multi-vendor destination for pumpkins, squash, apples, mums and local farm items. Venture just east of Malone off of Rte 11 to visit the Wilder Homestead, the boyhood home of Almanzo Wilder, as depicted in "Farmer Boy," by his wife, Laura Ingalls Wilder. You'll learn about the rural life in Northern New York from 1840 to 1875: the site, which is spread over 84 acres, includes several restored buildings and a newly completed replica of a one-room schoolhouse.
If you plan to stay overnight in the area, you'll find entertainment up north on Rte 37 at Hogansburg's Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort, with numerous gaming machines, game tables, live shows, lodging, a spa and dining.
