F&D Fall HV

Fall Food and Drink, Hudson Valley

Soon OrchardAutumn in the Hudson Valley is a vibrant feast for both eyes and appetites. Home to America’s oldest vineyard (Benmarl) and oldest winery (Brotherhood), the region has evolved into a forward-moving touchstone for organic and biodynamic growing practices, and for innovative craft breweries and distilleries. With so many growers intent on producing fresh, sustainable, organic foods and beverages, it’s almost too easy to find restaurants with menus based on locally made ingredients: the freshness is apparent from first bites to last.

It’s no surprise that the Hudson Valley celebrates the harvest season with particular enthusiasm. Restaurants and chefs, festival organizers and the farmers, vintners, brewers and distillers are eager to share the local bounty. Ready to don your own apron? You’ll find pumpkins, squashes and Thanksgiving turkeys for home-for-the-holidays feasts too, of course.

The Hudson Valley is one of America’s most bountiful apple growing regions, and festivals celebrate these crisp beauties with ciders -- think hard cider, hot mulled, fresh-pressed -- sauces, pies and other baked goods. Want more festivals? How about fetes celebrating cheeses, wines, craft beers, spirits distilled from local fruits and grains, and Greek, Italian and other ethnic foods too – all here, ready to deeply satisfy all your cravings.

Another popular way to immerse completely in the region’s gourmet dining choices is to take advantage of November’s annual two-week foodie cornucopia. Regional chefs create delectable menus and specials to entice reservations and introduce new dishes. You won’t leave hungry . . .
