Fall Food and Drink: Long Island

Planting Fields Arboretum & Coe Hall Mansion State Historic Park 342In autumn, talented Long Island chefs create dishes from a bountiful and fresh end-of-summer harvest. Regional culinary favorites are celebrated at the finest gourmet restaurants, elegant events at Gold Coast mansions, and in homey cafés. Though walks along the beaches will definitely put a rosy glow on your cheeks this time of year, you’ll get the same effect from a leisurely afternoon of wine tasting or by sampling tasty morsels at popular annual festivals. Shop for the catch of the day at local seafood markets and take advantage of fresh produce at roadside farm stands. Prepare your evening meal at home or, if the day is sunny, dine alfresco on the sand.

Just after Labor Day weekend when the beach crowd thins out, all the way through to Thanksgiving, foodies happily discover that Long Islanders know how to throw great ‘off-season’ parties too. Longstanding – and newer – festivals highlight the bounties of the field and vine, not to mention prize catches from local Long Island fishermen. Some events are devoted to one or two stars – pumpkins, garlic, apples, craft beers, oysters – and others feature a satisfying array of farm-to-table dishes created for the most discriminating palates.

Trip Advisor recently rated Long Island Wine Country #5 in its Top 10 Wine Destinations in the United States, and you’ll taste why as you sip your way along the ‘East End’ – nearly 50 wineries are on the North Fork alone, easily justifying a return visit.
