Head west on Rte 27A to Great River to the Bayard-Cutting Arboretum, an oasis of beauty and refreshment.
Take Rte 27A west to Rte 27 west and head south on the Robert Moses Causeway. Cross the Great South Bay to Fire Island. Walk along the Atlantic Ocean seashore and climb 192 steps to the top of the Fire Island Lighthouse, built in 1858.
Head west on Ocean Parkway to Jones Beach State Park. At the central mall area, enjoy deck games, miniature golf and beach volleyball. Have something to eat at one of the concessions before a nice stroll on the boardwalk or in the sand at the water's edge.
Or check out The Nautical Mile in Freeport, a great place to enjoy an afternoon on the water. Restaurants, workboats, open-air bars, fish markets, and live music all add to the nautical charm.
