Saratoga Springs to Cooperstown

DAY 1

In Cooperstown, tour the streets and shops of this quaint village and visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (888/425-5633). Stroll the grounds of an 1845 village and historic farmstead at the The Farmers' Museum (607/547-1450).

Head north on Rte 80 along the shore of Otsego Lake and then turn onto Rte 20 heading east. Your next stop is Sharon Springs. A self-guided tour of the town's historic Main Street reveals 20 plaques describing the lives and times of this National Historic Register spa village.

Have lunch and a delicious dessert in Sharon Springs at the Black Cat Cafe & Bakery (518/284-2575).

Head north on Rte 10 to Canajoharie and view exhibitions of American art, Mohawk Valley history and more at the Arkell Museum. See works by famed artists such as Winslow Homer, Robert Henri and Georgia O'Keefe.

Take I-90 (NYS Thruway) to Exit 28 and head north on Rte 30A. Stop in one of Fulton County's Glove Cities, Gloversville or Johnstown, with outlet shops filled with sport or designer gloves. See the factories where gloves are still made.  

Continue north on Rte 30 along the shore of the Great Sacandaga Lake to the town of Northville. Dine and stay overnight at Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center (518/863-4974).  

DAY 2

Near Bridge St in Northville, take a morning boat cruise on the Great Sacandaga Lake at Charters with Captain Dan. Fish for northern pike or rainbow and brown trout, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful autumn colors.

Head east from Northville on South Main St, Ridge Rd and Northville Rd, crossing the Batchellerville Bridge (with beautiful vistas all around); continue on South Shore Rd, turn onto Fish House Rd in Fish House. Take Rte 29 east into Saratoga Springs.

Visit Saratoga Gaming and Raceway with live harness racing and slots. Or pamper yourself at one of Saratoga's famous mineral springs, the Crystal Spa (518/584-2556). Stroll along a tree lined path at Saratoga State Park. Fine dining and shopping abounds downtown. Check out Hattie's (518/584-4790), Lillian's (518/587-7766) or the Sushi Thai Garden (518/580-0900) for dinner.
