If it's Saturday, begin your day at the Windmill Farm and Craft Market in Penn Yan on Rte 14A. With nearly 200 vendors featuring everything from produce to hand-crafted quilts, Mennonite-built outdoor furniture to clothing, miniatures to kettle corn, it's a great way to spend a day amid nature's fall displays.
Keuka Lake is surrounded by farms and vineyards and you should round out your afternoon with a stop on the Keuka Lake Wine Trail. Try Hunt Country Vineyards in Branchport followed by an elegant dinner overlooking Keuka Lake at the Esperanza Mansion or try a locals' favorite, The Liberty Restaurant(315/536-9036), where fresh seafood is a specialty, or Lloyd's Limited(315/919-9029), a former "speak easy," now a cozy family-oriented pub; both are in Penn Yan. You could stay overnight at the Esperanza Mansion (315/536-4400) or at a hotel in Penn Yan.
Spend your second day in the Finger Lakes viewing the outstanding foliage and sipping fine wine around Seneca Lake. Head east on Rte 54 and then south on Rte 14 down the west side of the lake - the views from the road are spectacular! You'll have the opportunity to experience the true Finger Lakes wine spectrum by sipping Rieslings, Cabernet Francs, Chardonnays, Merlots and more at Fox Run Vineyards & Cafe, Prejean Winery, Torrey Ridge Winery, Glenora Wine Cellars and Three Brothers Wineries and Estates - all part of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
Continue south on Rte 14, and head down to the Seneca Harbor Station to have a meal in a charming estord train station originally built in 1876, or to take a cruise on the luxurious Seneca Legacy with Captain Bill. Afterwards, stroll along the nearby streets or head directly to Watkins Glen State Parkto experience the majestic beauty of cascades, waterfalls and gorgeous fall colors.
