State Fair Shipwrecks Exhibit Adding Behemoth Fish, Longer ROV In-Water Demonstration Day

Whattam Syracuse, N.Y. - The Great Shipwrecks of NY's ‘Great' Lakes Signature Exhibit presented by New York Sea Grant and The Great New York State Fair is adding new displays and expanding its in-water demonstrations. The exhibit is located in and along the reflecting pool at the mini-NY State Park at the Fairgrounds. Starting Monday, August 25, an historic fish that has been a passive behemoth in waters around the globe for more than 100 million years will join 300 years of shipwrecks history in The Great Shipwrecks exhibit. NY Sturgeon for Tomorrow will have its 7-foot-long mounted sturgeon in the Great Shipwrecks 60-foot-long tent for the balance of the Fair.

2014 Great NY State Fair to have Great Lakes Research ROV, 24/7 Weather Buoy in State Park Pond

Syracuse, N.Y. -  The Great Shipwrecks of NY's ‘Great' Lakes Signature Exhibit at the 2014 Great New York State Fair will have components in the permanent reflecting pool at the 375-acre Syracuse, NY, fairgrounds. The ‘cement pond' is part of the State Park, operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation at the Fair. Twice daily, at 2pm and 4pm, the Great Lakes Research Consortium and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry ESF will demonstrate the use of a remotely-operated underwater vehicle/ROV in the pool. Information will be presented on how the high-tech equipment is used to further a science-based understanding of the Great Lakes.

Pirate of the Caribbean Will Attack on Skaneateles Lake

Joining the marauding this year is Rusty Rice, a captain for the Barbara S. Wiles. Although new to Pirate Day, he is no stranger to pirate play. Rice was a second mate on the Continental Sloop Providence, a replica of America's first war ship, when Disney chartered the tall ship and hired its crew as extras. He appeared in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Deadman's Chest" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."

(Aug. 6, 2014) - The Hudson River Valley Greenway and Hudson River Valley National Heritage announced today that the 15th Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble will feature more than 200 exciting events throughout the Hudson River Valley region. The Ramble will be held during each weekend in September, and features the events of more than 150 partner organizations. The Hudson River Valley Ramble offers a variety of walks, hikes, paddles, biking tours and other events and is designed to showcase the scenic, natural, historic and cultural resources of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area . Ramble events are led by naturalists, ecologists, historians, geologists and trained volunteers from participating organizations.
