Albany, N.Y. --- The Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACCVB) is pleased to roll out the welcome mat for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Karate National Championships, June 28th through July 3rd, 2010. The actual competition, being held at the Times Union Center, will take place Wednesday, June 30th through Saturday, July 3rd, 2010. The event will bring approximately 2,000 athletes to the Capital City along with their families, friends, and fans. All together the city should see an influx of over 5,000 visitors to the area during the week the Karate enthusiasts are in town. "We are thrilled to welcome back AAU Karate to the Capital Region," said Michele Vennard, President/CEO of the ACCVB. Vennard estimates the economic impact from hosting the AAU Karate Nationals in Albany to be over $1 million - a reflection of direct spending in Albany County for the business generated by AAU athletes and spectators through hotel stays, food, shopping, travel, and other expenditures. "This is a great opportunity for us to showcase New York's Capital City to all of the AAU competition attendees and to also support our local athletes." Approximately 100 of the nearly 2,000 athletes competing in the AAU competition are from the Capital Region. In conjunction with the Albany Council of the Traditional Karate-Do Organization (AC-TKO), the ACCVB is pleased to sponsor seven year-old, local athlete, NaSharea Richinsyear, who will be competing in the Female Intermediate Level. The AC-TKO works closely with the city supported community centers and after school enrichment programs throughout the City of Albany. These programs serve many under privileged students who cannot afford to compete. Some additional AAU athlete sponsors include the Crowne Plaza, Hampton Inn & Suites Albany Downtown, and the Times Union Center. Opening ceremonies for the competition will take place at Times Union Center on Thursday, July 1st at 8:00 AM. Finals start at 5:00 PM on Saturday, July 3rd and will include club demonstrations as well as the Kata Grand Championship. All events are open to the public. Tickets for the AAU Karate National Championships can be purchased only at the main door of the Times Union Center. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs.
