cemetery-view1.jpgOwego, N.Y. -- The Evergreen Cemetery in Owego has always been a local attraction, particularly the SaSaNa Loft Monument which shows a beautiful panoramic view of the village. Not only is the peaceful cemetery visually attractive, it is also historically significant to the village of Owego. The cemetery is the final resting place to many important individuals who have shaped Owego and Tioga County into what it is today. With the recent publication of an Evergreen Cemetery Walking Tour pamphlet, now visitors can learn about the history of the 159 year old cemetery and its distinguished inhabitants. The pamphlet is an impressive 14 page color publication. It highlights the different sections of the cemetery like the Civil War and Firemen sections. It also depicts important historical figures who are buried there as well as interesting facts and achievements from their lives. The pamphlet has a detailed map of the cemetery and a step by step guide of the route to take and stops to make to see all of the notable sites. Additionally, it contains pictures of several of its occupants and the important locations. The publication was written by Tioga County Historian Emma M. Sedore and made possible through funding from a Preserve America grant and the Village of Owego. It is available for free at the Tioga County Tourism office.
