Garnerville, N.Y. - GAGA Arts Center is pleased to announce Rubbings, Tracing and Carvings, an exhibition of rubbings on mylar and wood carvings by artist Nancy Azara. The exhibition will be on view from June 3rd through June 26th, with a reception on Friday, June 3rd from 6-9PM. Rubbings, tracings and carvings are ancient forms of art making that capture the "essence" or "spirit" of an object, record an impression or a moment in time and often act as a metaphor for "self" in the context of her place in the world and the relationship of that place with regard to other living things. Azara began The Castle Series of rubbings during a residency at a castle in Umbertide, Italy at Civitella Ranieri (May, 2010). Rubbing with both water soluble and non-soluble caran d'ache oil pastels on mylar over carved luan (wood) plates. She also traces and paints the leaves and collages them onto the surface. The wood plates are carved in such a way that their surface resembles tree limbs, trunks, bark and human forms as well as leaves, grape leaves, fig leaves, hickory leaves, fern leaves and many others. There will also be a selection of wood carvings, including two carved and painted sculptures with aluminum leaf and encaustic: "Crossed" and "Queen of Spades" both 60" x 22.5" x 3". Art critic Lily Wei described "Š Queen of Spades (2009) Š its surface interrupted by a cascade of pink that suggests the folds of a gown and an attachment that mimics the ruff worn by queens of old, this abstract, ambiguous Queen, as part of the Tarot deck, as a surrogate for the artist, has something to say about instinct, chance and destiny." Nancy Azara is an artist who has exhibited in New York City, throughout the United States and abroad. Her work was shown at the Andre Zarre Gallery in Chelsea, NY in March of 2010. She has shown in numerous one woman exhibitions at Donahue/ Sosinski Art and A.I.R. Gallery, at SACI in Florence, Italy, the Tweed Museum in Duluth, Minnesota and others, and many group shows such as the traveling Rutger's University exhibition How American Women Artists Invented Post-Modernism, 2006. She recently had works on exhibit at the Art Link Gallery in Korea and a solo exhibition at the Sanyi Musuem in Taiwan. Azara is the author of Spirit Taking Form: Making a Spiritual Practice of Making Art (Red Wheel/ Wiesers). She teaches workshops and classes scheduled for this summer and upcoming fall. www.nancyazara.com Nancy Azara: Rubbings, Tracings and Carvings June 3-26, 2011 Opening Reception: Friday, June 3rd, from 6-9PM with a special performance by Moving Mantras at 8:00PM Gallery Hours: Saturdays and Sundays 1:00-5:00PM Location and Contact Information: GAGA is located at the Garnerville Arts & Industrial Center, 55 Railroad Avenue, Garnerville, NY 10923 in the Village of West Haverstraw, Rockland County.
