tioga-county.JPGOwego, N.Y. - The Media and Community are invited to come to a Check Awards ceremony on Friday, July 13, at 11:00 am at the Gateway Community Park Deck, Front Street, in downtown Owego.  Checks of $1,834 each received from the proceeds of this year's Strawberry Festival's 1st Annual 5K Run/Walk and Kids' Fun Run will be presented to two worthwhile Owego causes:  The Gateway Community Park Project and the Tioga County Historical Society Museum.  This year was the Strawberry Festival's first-ever 5K Run/Walk event and it was met with overwhelming success attracting 371 5K (3.1 mile) runners and 72 children running the near one mile course.   Due to the flood of 2011, both organizations suffered a setback in their operational and growth efforts.   The Gateway Community Park is finally becoming a reality since the fire of 2000 that burned two buildings in downtown Owego.  The demolition of these buildings created a vacuum and eyesore which has lasted 12 years, and now with a dedicated and focused committee and community donations and grants, this space is taking shape into an attractive community deck and green space that leads to the beautiful Owego Riverwalk.  Much time, effort and funds are needed to complete the final phases of the project. The Tioga County Historical Society Museum, which is located at 110 Front Street, Owego, along the Susquehanna River, lost everything in the Flood of 2011.  The building has been cleaned up, but document/artifact recovery is still ongoing. The challenge of rebuilding will take time as every area on the lower level of the museum was affected. Cleaning costs were substantial and rebuilding/replacing lost items has just begun.  It is hoped these funds will help to continue building these two programs that have been and will be essential to attracting people into Owego and Tioga County.     # # #
