lake-george-biking.JPGLake George, N.Y. - Attention cyclists - The Lake George Area in New York's Adirondacks has a gem of a bike path waiting for you. The Warren County Bikeway is a multi-modal trail used by bicyclists, runners, and walkers of all ages. The trail follows what was once a branch of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, constructed back in the late 1800s. Early vacationers to the Lake George Area could take the train from New York City or Albany to Fort Edward, and then north to the railroad station in Lake George Village. Now this corridor is a paved right-of-way offering a family-friendly bicycle route. From the southern terminus, there is a large parking area that will allow for 7.6 miles of riding, most of which is a dedicated bikeway, making it a wonderful family activity. A section of the trail runs alongside a golf course, but is clearly marked with wide bicycle lanes for safe travel. As riders head north toward the Village of Lake George, they will encounter gentle up and downhills, bridges, canopied woodlands, ponds and streams. Be sure to stop and read the signage along the route which highlights the history of the surrounding area; and take note of wildflowers, fiddlehead ferns in the spring, and all sorts of flora, fauna and small wildlife along the trail. A rest area and picnic table is conveniently located just past the halfway point. The final descent into the Village of Lake George is a sight to behold as the bikeway opens up to a magnificent panoramic view of the lake and surrounding mountains. At this point you can explore the Village, take a cruise, enjoy a picnic lunch at Battlefield Park, swim at Lake George Beach and so much more! If you begin in the Village of Lake George and ride south, be sure to save time for ice cream or lunch shops conveniently located near the parking area. If you want to ride further south, the bikeway connects with the Feeder Canal in Glens Falls for an additional 10 miles. An off-road bike will be better served on these crushed stone trails. Need a bike rental, not to worry. There is one rental shop at either end of the route offering hourly or daily rentals. If you plan a point-to-point ride, leave a car at either end. A round trip ride can allow for time spent in either the City of Glens Falls or the Village of Lake George. Need a map to visualize your ride?
