Quilting by the Lake is a nationally recognized conference with internationally known instructors. From July 14 to July 26, the conference will offer classes, workshops, lectures, and a quilt and merchant show to encourage the development of quilters. "Our goal is to promote wider appreciation for quilts as an art form, and the conference gives artists the opportunity to hone their skills and develop as quilters," said Donna Lamb, executive director of Schweinfurth Art Center. "We've had people from New Zealand and South Africa attend the conference in the past. It's really an exciting time for quilters from all over to get together and learn from one another." During the conference, more than 100 quilts will be featured in the Quilting by the Lake Quilt Show in OCC's Allyn Hall. The show will also include vendors such as quilt shops and merchants selling quilting materials like hand-dyed fabric, thread and sewing machines. Admission to the show is $6 for adults and free for registered conference participants, Schweinfurth Art Center members and children 12 and under. The public can also sign up for Quilting by the Lake Tour Days on July 18 and July 25 to receive access to the workshops taking place during the two-week conference. The cost is $30 and includes classroom tours, quilt show admission, lunch and lecture. The cost is $25 each for groups of 20. Both the Quilting by the Lake conference and quilt show are organized by the Schweinfurth Art Center. This spring, the multi-arts facility is hosting Innovators & Legends: Generations in Textiles and Fiber, a nationally touring exhibit that features artwork by multiple generations of top-tier, internationally celebrated fiber artists. The exhibition tells the story of the ongoing transformation of fiber arts from the functional and decorative to the innovative and experimental. The stop at Schweinfurth Art Center marks the exhibit's only venue in the Northeast, as the exhibit opened in Michigan and will travel to Kentucky and Colorado after New York. The exhibit opens May 26 with an opening reception May 25 from 4-6 p.m. and a lecture by exhibiting artist Arturo Alonzo Sandoval at 6 p.m. The exhibit runs through Aug. 11.
