tioga-county.JPGThis year's one-day event promises to be bigger and better than ever! Owego, N.Y. - This August 3rd, the Tioga County Tourism Office will be hosting the 11th Annual Bike Tioga, an event designed to promote healthy living while displaying the county's natural beauty and local businesses. Bike Tioga is not a race; in fact, riders are encouraged to stop along the way and take their time. Picnic lunches and local farms have been popular stops in the past, and the event has always emphasized a relaxed, fun environment. This year's rides are 23, 41, 61, and 103 miles, with various elevations through flat and hilly countryside. The shortest route, "Rudin Farm Ride," allows cyclists to enjoy the scenery while also offering the opportunity to view the 1800's style waterwheel-driven sawmill at Rudin Farms and the modern Wagner Lumber Mill on Gaskill Road. The longest route, "Cornell Farms Ride," circles up to the Cornell Plantations and Farms on Daisy Hollow Road and returns via Irish Settlement Road. In past years, Bike Tioga have been held over Saturday and Sunday, a two day event; this year, event organizers decided to focus efforts and resources on one day of cycling. "As we looked back to previous years, we decided that holding Bike Tioga on one day only would allow our office to more effectively concentrate on the experience of our cyclists," says Emily VanScoy, an Americorps member currently serving at the Tioga County Tourism Office. "At Americorps, we really focus on healthy living through community efforts. This event is designed to bring both new and experienced cyclists to our county, and with a lot of hard work and community initiative, I think we can have the best Bike Tioga yet!" The rides all begin at Pavilion #5 at Hickories Park in Owego, NY on Saturday, August 3rd, 2013. Event day attractions will include complementary on-site massage therapists, nutrition and health information, and lots of free food!
