Auburn, N.Y. - The Harriet Tubman Boosters Club is pleased to announce that on Saturday, September 21st the Syracuse Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (SGMWA), under the direction of Dr. Joan R. Hillsman, will present a concert of music to honor and celebrate the life of Harriet Tubman. This concert will take place from 3-4 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St. in Auburn. A special poetry reading by New York City poet Cyd Charisse Fulton will open the concert. Sponsored by the Harriet Tubman Boosters Club, the concert will feature music composed and directed by Dr. Hillsman, which includes a narrative of Harriet's life from slavery in the south to freedom in the north. Admission is $10 per person in advance, and $12 at the door. Tickets are available on the Tubman Boosters website (www.harriettubmanboosters.org), or at the Harriet Tubman Home, the Seward House Museum, Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Booker T. Washington Center. Copies of Ms. Fulton's book of poems about Harriet Tubman, "Feeding off of the North Star," will beavailable for $10, and the author will sign copies during intermission and after the concert. Hillsman and the Syracuse Chapter-Gospel Music Workshop of America are dedicated toreaching out to the upstate New York community and enhancing the quality of life via the arts. Dr.Hillsman has over 45 years of experience as a music educator, holding a Bachelor and Master ofMusic Education, as well as a PhD in Musicology. Cyd Charisse Fulton is a poet and writer from Brooklyn, NY. She is a graduate of New York University and has been nominated for the 2012 Pushcart Prize. She created the poem "Freedom Fruit" for the students of Genesee Elementary School in Auburn for their "Apple Trees for HarrietTubman" project.
