Windham, NY Named as a Site for the 2015 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup As the Town Gears Up for Next Week's 2014 Races

Windham, N.Y. - In one week, the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano will kick off in Windham but today the small community in the Northern Catskills found out that it has already won. In an announcement made by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the Switzerland-based worldwide governing body of cycling, Windham was once again named the only mountain bike world cup site in the United States.

"This is a reflection of the immense amount of hard work that is put in by our volunteers, sponsors and our entire community," said Race Director Nick Bove. "Every year that the world comes back to Windham is another year that we bring in tourism dollars and promote the unique all-season recreation opportunities that Windham and Greene County offer."

This year's World Cup races will kick off on Thursday, Aug. 7 and continue through Sunday, Aug. 10.

The 2015 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Calendar is:

April 11-12 Lourdes (France)
May 23-24 Nove Mesto na Morave (Czech Republic)
May 30-31 Albstadt (Germany)
June 6-7 Fort William (Great Britain)
June 13-14 Leogang (Austria)
July 4-5 Lenzerheide (Switzerland)

Windham 2014 World Cup organizers are planning numerous community events again this year including an indoor/outdoor expo, a block party in downtown Windham, a laser and music show, Race the World amateur cross-country and downhill races, and a Kids' Fun Race. Additional activities for racers and spectators alike will celebrate the uniqueness of the Windham area throughout the weeklong event, including a Ride the Plank Challenge, where riders attempt to cross a pond on wooden planks supported only by inflatable tubes floating on water and the Red Bull Berm Burners, an individual head-to-head pursuit dirt cycling race that tests the rider's ability between two fast, steep berms.

Unlike every other race on the circuit, the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano at Windham is principally funded by private donations, along with the support and resources of Windham Mountain. The event is organized by a team of local Windham supporters and racing enthusiasts and hundreds of community volunteers who come together to organize and run this world-class event.
