Nearly a dozen ski areas offer a wide range of downhill skiing and snowboarding opportunities-from family friendly to expert-only. Family-friendly ski areas include Gore Mountain in North Creek, West Mountain in Queensbury, and Snow Ridge in Turin, which benefits from Great Lake Ontario's lake-effect snow. Many ski areas also offer cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. State parks in the region offer ice-skating, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

Great places to enjoy skiing and other winter sports in the region include:

  • Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington: Home of the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies, Whiteface has 81 trails serviced by eight lifts. Open from November through early spring, it is one of the premier alpine ski resorts of the northeast . . Known as the Olympic Mountain, Whiteface hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games alpine events.
  • Gore Mountain in North Creek: A family-friendly place to ski offering 102 trails - 94 alpine and eight Nordic. Vertical drop is 2,537 feet and the longest run is almost four miles.
  • Titus Mountain in Malone: Stretching across three mountains, Titus offers 42 trails and glades, two terrain parks and 10 lifts. Night skiing and snow tubing located on-site.
  • West Mountain in Glens Falls: Great skiing for all abilities. Enjoy 40 trails spanning 124 acres. Night skiing, snow tubing and lodging packages available. Located near the Lake George area.
  • Garnet Hill Lodge Cross Country Ski Area in North Creek: Authentic Nordic ski resort offer four seasons of fun on 600 acres. Lodging, dining and family-friendly entertainment offered throughout the ski season.

Capital Saratoga

Downhill ski areas include Maple Ski Ridge, Royal Mountain and Willard Mountain. Pineridge XC Ski Area in Postenkill and Tree Have Trails in Galway offer miles of groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. State parks throughout the region offer ice-skating, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.


Downhill ski areas include Hunter, Windham, Plattekill and Villa Roma mountain resorts, as well as ski centers at Belleayre Mountain, Holiday Mountain and Plattekill Mountain. Many ski areas also offer cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. In Tannersville, Mountain Trails XC Ski Center has over 35 marked and groomed trails.

  • Belleayre Mountain: 171 skiable acres with 96% of terrain covered by snowmaking; 8 lifts, 47 trails & glades, Rail Park, Terrain Park & Half Pipe; 4 lodges; equipment rentals & lessons; open daily, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Lodges; 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Lifts.
  • Frost Valley YMCA: 6,000 acres set deep in the Catskill Mountains with miles of skiing for all ages and abilities. Over 25 kilometers of trails, including groomed trails; track set; and backcountry trails. Open daily 9:00 AM - 4:30; Ski rental shop open weekends.  

Chautauqua- Allegheny

Ski areas, including Holiday Valley Resort, HoliMont Resort, Peek'n Peak Resort and Swain Resort, offer a wide range of downhill skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Holiday Valley, HoliMont, Peek'n Peak and the Art Roscoe XC Ski Area offer great cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. State parks such as Allegany offer ice-skating, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Local snowmobile clubs groom hundreds of miles of trails in one of New York's snowiest regions.

  • Allegany State Park offers top cross-country skiing. One of the most well-known trails within the park is the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area that offers over 18 miles of groomed trails for both cross country skiing as well as over 25 miles of backcountry trails.
  • For even more miles of adventure, visit the Holiday Valley cross country skiing trails. Here, you can cruise the groomed trails or the tracks made by snowmobiles. Location: Ellicottville, NY
  • Pfeiffer Nature Center's offers group cross-country ski trips on 9+ miles of trails. Open dawn to dusk year round, their free trails offer everything from short, level walks to long, rugged climbs. Enjoy deep woods and open meadows, creeks and ponds, and lots of great wildlife habitats. Portville. NY

Finger Lakes

Downhill ski areas include Bristol, Greek Peak and Labrador Mountain resorts as well as Brantling, Four Seasons, Hunt Hollow, Song and Toggenburg ski centers. Many cross-country ski and snowshoe trails are found throughout the region in resorts and parks such as Beaver Lake and Cumming nature centers, Greek Peak Mountain Resort and Highland Forest County Park.

  •  Toggenburg Mountain Winter Sports: Six lifts, 25 trails, two terrain parks, rental shop, childcare, restaurant, RV parking areas and musical entertainment. Longest run: one mile. Location: Fabius, NY
  •   Greek Peak Mountain and Nordic Center: Greek Peak Mountain Resort in Cortland is a premier destination ski resort. 30 trails, slopes and a new quad lift for 2014.Three terrain parks make Greek Peak Mountain Resort an ideal destination for snowboarders. Greek Peak Nordic Center is the perfect cross-country setting.

Greater Niagara

Downhill ski centers include Buffalo Ski Club and Kissing Bridge, each within a half-hour's drive of Buffalo. Snow-tubers love the giant downhill tubing park adjacent to Kissing Bridge, the Colden Tubing Company and Polarwave Snowtubing Park in Batavia featuring chutes of all sizes.

Cross-country ski trails crisscross the region from Byrncliff Resort to Letchworth State Park. Other winter sports in Letchworth Park include snowshoeing and ice-skating.

Hudson Valley

Downhill ski areas include Catamount, Mt. Peter, Sawkill Family Center, Thunder Ridge and Tuxedo Ridge. Rocking Horse Ranch also features downhill and cross-country skiing. Fahnestock Winter Park, Minnewaska State Park Preserve and the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz have cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. Other parks throughout the region offer ice-skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

  • Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Located in the Shawangunk Mountains just outside of New Paltz. Minnewask hosts winter nature programs, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowshoe rentals. Open 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM daily.
  • Mohonk Mountain House: Cross-country skiing offers a great way to cover many trails of Mohonk's territory, weather permitting. 30 miles of trails. Ski Shop with ski and snow shoe rentals on premises.
  • Wallkill Valley Rail Trail: 12.2-mile path for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through New Paltz and Gardiner.
  • Moriello Park Ice Rink: Newly opened outdoor ice rink in Open daily for hockey: 9:00 AM-11:00 AM, 2:00 PM-4:00 PM and 7:30 PM-9:00 PM. Open daily for skating: 11:00 AM-2:00 PM; 4:00 PM-7:30 PM. Outdoor pond skating and sledding is also available at New Paltz Sports Park
  • Hudson Valley Resort & Spa: Fly down the rolling hills of the resort's snow covered golf course. On-site snow making ensures fun without worrying about snow fall and a T-bar lift whisks riders right up to the top after each run. Open Saturdays and Sundays; 10am-12pm & 2-4pm.
  • Pine Grove Ranch and Family Resort: A day pass at the ranch let's you and your family enjoy all activities at the ranch without needing to stay. Snow tubing, ice skating, skiing, laser tag, ping pong, indoor pool and more fun than you can pack into a 10 AM - 4PM day!
  • Rocking Horse Ranch: A giant snow tub run with a lift to bring you back to the top. Day guests can bring their own sleds or snow tubes, but snow tubes are available for rent. Handicapped accessible.

Thousand Islands

In the Snowbelt, east of Lake Ontario, lake-effect snow covers the Tug Hill Plateau with an annual average of 300 inches. At its edge, Winona State Forest has over 30 miles of nature trails and unplowed roads ideal for snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and even dog-sledding. Dry Hill Ski Area just outside Watertown has ski and snowboarding trails open day and night, and a fantastic snowtubing center.
