ATTRACTIONS

The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail was the first organized and longest running wine trail in New York, established in 1983.  With 15 wineries, one cidery, one meadery, four distilleries, and countless other businesses involved, the Trail has become a model for other wine trails both in New York and around the country.  www.cayugawinetrail.com 2770 Ernsberger Road, Romulus, NY 800-684-5217

The Seneca Lake Wine Trail surrounds the sapphire waters of Seneca Lake and includes 34 wineries. Being located in the heart of New York's Finger Lakes Region, the climate supports not only the growth of hardy native grapes and premium hybrids, but also more delicate varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. www.senecalakewine.com 877-536-2717

The Finger Lakes Cheese Trail is comprised of 14 working, family dairies throughout the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. They offer a variety of artisan cheeses, including cheddars, goudas, chevres, brie and mozzarella. While a few of the farms do not have visitor hours, most do and encourage visits throughout the year. Trail members' cheeses are available at their farms, local shops and farmers markets, and several wineries and restaurants throughout the region. Each year, the Trail hosts four open houses at their farms, and encourages the public to come visit and tour their farms. They also participate in many community and regional events throughout the year. www.flcheesetrail.com

Women's Rights Historical Park

The First National Women's Rights Convention was held at the Wesleyan Chapel, in July 19, 1848. Notable women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Martha Wright and Mary Ann M'Clintock met in the Wesleyan Chapel and took pen-to-paper to draft the "Declaration of Sentiments."   This demanded that women not only have the right to vote, but to own land, hold jobs and many other civil liberties that had been denied them. The newly renovated chapel is now part of the National Women's Rights Historical Park in Seneca Falls and is open for visits year round. Today the Women's Rights National Historical Park commemorates it. www.nps.gov/wori

The National Memorial Day Museum

During the fall of 1865, Henry C. Welles, Waterloo, NY, druggist, proposed that a commemoration be held to honor the deceased soldiers of the Civil War. The following May one of the first Memorial Day celebrations in America was hosted in Waterloo. Then, 100 years later, on May 26, 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a Presidential Proclamation recognizing the town as the official Birthplace of Memorial Day. The National Memorial Day Museum: www.wlhs-ny.org

Sampson State Park Military Museum

Seneca County also thrives on a rich military history. In the 1940s and 1950s, Sampson Naval Training Station and Sampson Air Force Base were temporary homes to over 400,000 US soldiers. The adjacent former Seneca Army Depot occupied 10,587 acres between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. The property was used as a munitions storage and disposal facility by the United States Army from 1941 until the 1990s. Today, visitors can learn more about these historic facilities at Sampson State Park and the Sampson Military Museum, both located on the former grounds of these properties.
