Purr-fect Doggy Day Trips in New York State
The City of Beacon is less than 90 minutes north of Manhattan and is an incredibly dog-friendly city filled with wonderful eclectic stores and restaurants, many of which invite in well-behaved leashed dogs. Opened in August 2006, the Beacon Barkery was established by two women, Nancy Pate & Libby Faison. The ‘Barkery' is a unique place to find the coolest gourmet cookies and treats for pets in the Hudson Valley. The store achieved the honor of winning the "Best of the Hudson Valley" award for "Best Pet Bakery" in 2007, and 'Best Pet Event' in 2008. Favorite treats include "Cannolis", "Peanut Butter Puppies", and "Tail Bangers" for dogs and "Bonita Flakes" and seafood treats for cats. All baked treats are prepared with all natural human grade ingredients, no sugar, chocolate or unsafe additives. Although bakery items are not baked on premises, they hold to the highest of standards in the selection of all treats contained in the store.
The future plans for the Beacon Barkery include the continued collaboration with local rescue organizations, an on-line store, collaboration with local professional groomers to offer services at the store, Yappie Hours, special events during holiday times and setting up classes to teach pet owners how to massage their pets.
Beacon also hosts Beacon Barks, an annual parade for pets and their people each spring sponsored by the Friends Beacon Dog Park and The Beacon Barkery to benefit the many dog and animal organizations within the local community. After the Beacon Barks Parade, look for the "Your Dog Welcome Here" signs in the store windows and know that your best friend will be treated as a welcome guest - many stores will be offering specials this day so don't forget to get your Beacon Barks Bucks. Sit at a cafe table and order lunch for you and your best friend and enjoy live music. Stroll the street looking at all the other dogs and visit the booths with special dog related items. Maybe you'll even find a new best friend.
Also about 90 minutes from Manhattan is Long Island's Gold Coast, which features many enticing activities for both you and your pooch. Let your favorite furry friends be part of your travel adventure as you take them to a real Gold Coast mansion on the water at Coindre Hall in Huntington or to the home of President Theodore Roosevelt at Sagamore Hill where they are always welcome on leashes. You can also bring your dog to Watch Hill and Sailors Haven on Fire Island for some fun in the sun this summer.
