“Disability Pride, Disability Joy, Exists” A Disability Pride Art-Making Program

Details

Join “Disability Pride, Disability Joy, Exist,” an art-making program that celebrates disability as an integral part of human diversity. Led by Annie Nishwani Lachhman, a disabled artist, and Lakshmee Lachhman-Persad, an educator on disability inclusion and accessibility, the workshop invites participants of all ages and backgrounds to learn about the progressive Disability Pride flags, explore various aspects of disability, and create their own art, fostering inclusivity, understanding, and empowerment.

Art supplies will be available to support a wide range of access needs. The program is wheelchair accessible. ASL interpreters will be present, and visual descriptions will be shared throughout. We strive to make our programs inclusive and welcoming—please contact visitorservices@bbg.org with any accessibility-related questions or requests.

Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to commemorate the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. Happy 35 years to the ADA!

Free with Garden admission. Presented in partnership with Accessible Travel NYC.

Photo description:

Lakshmee and Annie, two Indo-Caribbean women of color smile and pose joyfully on both sides of an Accessible Travel NYC signage. On the left, Annie, a wheelchair wearing a yellow top and blue floral pants, is laughing with her head tilted back. On the right, Lakshmee in a cream and yellow floral dress with blue sneakers stands, flashing a peace sign and smiling warmly as she looks across to Annie. The sign between them describes the "Disability Pride Flag Color Meaning" and additional design elements of the Disability Pride flags created by Annie Nishwani Lachhman. The scene is outdoors under a canopy covered with lush green ivy vines, creating a peaceful, natural setting. The vibe is cheerful and welcoming, celebrating Disability Pride.
