Who taught Martin Luther King about pacifism? Did you know it was a gay man? And did you know he also planned the March on Washington? Bayard Rustin is the gay civil rights leader you have never heard of—a great (and charming!) man unjustly erased from history. A major activist in the peace and racial justice movements of the mid-20th century, Rustin was also a gay African American during an extremely homophobic and racist era. This talk will give a broad overview of his career and the challenges he faced while also considering the continuing relevance of his ideas.
