The inaugural Adirondack Winter Invitational brings together some of the best men’s college hockey players in the nation for two days of action in the historic 1980 Herb Brooks Arena. University of Massachusetts-Amherst plays Cornell in the opening game of the invitational Friday, followed by Arizona State taking on Clarkson in the nightcap. The two winners from Friday night’s games will face off Saturday night for the championship and the losing teams will hit the ice in a consolation round. Cornell and Clarkson are both part of the ECAC Hockey conference, which hosts its championship tournament on this same ice in Lake Placid every March. Massachusetts plays in the Hockey East Conference, while Arizona State is a Pac-12 school that plays as a Division I independent for men’s hockey. The Sun Devils, an NCAA Division I team since 2016-2017, will join the National Collegiate Hockey Conference starting in the 2024-2025 season. The Adirondack Winter Invitational takes place in the middle of the season for the four teams as they prepare to make a run toward an NCAA Tournament bid when the calendar turns to 2024 in January. Cornell and Clarkson will face off twice in February in ECAC Hockey conference games, while the Sun Devils will host Cornell in January for two non-conference games in Tempe, Arizona.
