Barry Goldwater Online Barry Goldwater, a veteran of World War II, spent virtually his whole political career as a Republican Senator from Arizona. When he began in the 1950s, his strongly conservative views were a minority position within the party. And he lost his run for president against Lyndon Johnson in 1964. But starting with that campaign, the Republican right wing grew steadily stronger, and Goldwater emerged as an icon of the conservative movement. Even so, his spiky independence and his relatively liberal social views made for a lifetime of quirky and lively debate. Sandra Opdycke, Ph.D. is an historian. She has written books about the flu epidemic of 1918, the woman suffrage movement, the WPA of the 1930s, and Bellevue Hospital, as well as a biography of Jane Addams, an historical atlas of American women’s history, and several co-authored books and articles on social policy. She worked for a number of years at Hudson River Psychiatric Center and later taught American History and Urban History at Bard, Vassar, and Marist Colleges. She serves as an occasional lecturer at the Center for Lifetime Studies in Poughkeepsie. Registration is required.
