Laura Free, associate professor and chair, Department of History, Hobart & William Smith Colleges will focus on Stanton and describe a time when “male” became synonymous with citizenship in the 14th amendment, and Stanton and Anthony made a tactical shift in their crusade for suffrage, with divisive and long-lasting effects. Free is the author of “Suffrage Reconstructed: Gender, Race and Voting Rights in the Civil War Era.”
