America's oldest covered bridge, Hyde Hall bridge, will turn 200 years old with a grand celebration. Visitors will attend free events from special presentations about the history of covered bridges, music from old time music specialists and from students at Cooperstown (NY) High School; a classic car show; children's activities; speeches honoring the 1825 bridge; and the unveiling of a model of the bridge. A souvenir booklet will be available, along with a special edition post card with a unique cancellation in honor of the bridge's celebration and a special license plate with the bridge included. Food and drink will be on sale. Camping sites can be reserved through the park. New York State Parks' Glimmerglass and the Hyde Hall State Historic Site are hosting the events along with the New York State Covered Bridge Society, the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center, and the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges. There were estimated 14,000 covered bridges built in the United States and approximately 800 remain. Hyde Hall Covered Bridge; was built to give access to the Hyde Hall estate of George Clarke.
