EXPERIMENTS IN OPERA Presents “Modularias” at The Flea Theater Four premieres for modular synthesizer and voice by composers Jason Cady (Candy Corn), Andrew Raffo Dewar (Volver), Joan La Barbara (Virginia and the Time Machine) and Kamala Sankaram (The Wife).
FROM EIO'S FOUNDERS: “As composers, we are always looking for ways to challenge ourselves and our peers to think about different modes of working. In the case of Modularias, we decided to build a show around a specific instrument and sound world. Modular analog synthesizers have been around since the 1950’s but in the last 20 years, they have gotten cheaper, smaller and generally more accessible for enthusiasts and musicians. These instruments are created by linking together different electronic modules and as a result, no two instruments are the same. This also means that composers can prioritize different kinds of sounds and interactivity based on how they hear their own work developing. We are very excited to present the new music on this program and the beautiful instruments onstage as the first event of our season-long residency at The Flea Theater. ” — Jason, Aaron and Matthew
