New York City Ballet: 20th Century Masters

SPAC’s 20th-Century Master's program will pay homage to iconic choreographers Merce Cunningham, Jerome Robbins, and George Balanchine. Highlighting the program is Cunningham’s "Summerspace" (Feldman/Cunningham), which has not been performed at SPAC since 1967. Imbued with fluid angularity, Merce Cunningham’s "Summerspace" presents contemporary whimsy underscored by a suspenseful, chirping score. Displaying Robbins’ penchant for crafting diverse emotional atmospheres to solo piano pieces, "Piano Pieces" (Tschaikovsky/Robbins) is a folk-tinged ballet for three couples, a male soloist, and a corps de ballet that contrasts delicate solemnness with congenial amusement. Closing the program is Balanchine’s "Rubies" (Stravinsky/Balanchine), which sends its dancers racing across the stage like lightning to Stravinsky’s jazz-inflected piano capriccio, emphasized by a sharp attack and sassy style.
