Join New York City Ballet for a special educational presentation illuminating the extraordinary and expansive repertory of Founding Choreographer George Balanchine, hosted by NYCB Principal Dancer Gonzalo Garcia. While Mr. Balanchine may best be known for his iconic ballet The Nutcracker, he choreographed more than 400 pieces in his lifetime. From the minimalist and neoclassical Agon to the romantic and jazzy Who Cares?, you’ll see excerpts from some of his greatest masterpieces and learn about the dance legacy he created for generations to enjoy. All Balanchine will feature an ensemble of fifteen New York City Ballet dancers in costume performing excerpts from the Company’s world-renowned repertory, with live musical accompaniment provided by pianists from NYCB. This new format represents an innovative and safe way to bring dance to the community, while adhering to carefully mapped out, socially-distanced seating and rigorous COVID protocols both in SPAC’s public spaces and backstage. The presentation will be approximately 75 minutes long with no intermission and will explore the history and inner workings of New York City Ballet through the performance of excerpts and commentary from the artists.
