Photography, "Transparency," and the 19th-century View

This guided walk and lecture led by Professor Laurie Dahlberg will invite participants to consider photography’s impact on 19th century culture and examine the camera’s reputation as a transparent, truth telling device. In Frederic Church’s lifetime, photography was a new medium, astounding audiences and impressing thinkers and artists with new ways of capturing a supposed “truth”. During this program, Bard Professor Laurie Dahlberg will provide important historical context for understanding this medium and consider the possibilities and limitations of early landscape photography.
