Sail Through History

Experience our newest interactive exhibit, “Wrecks, Rescues, and Guiding Lights,” to access historic information about lighthouses, ship wrecks, and the many heroic acts of the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Challenge your gaming skills by firing a cannon or navigating a sail boat through dangerous water! See our 1908 National Historic Landmark oyster culling house filled with artifacts and historic photographs that document the history of shell fishing on the Great South Bay. Enjoy the Museum’s small craft vessel collection and the work of some of Long Island’s most important designers/builders such as George Frank Carter, Wilbur Ketcham, Frank Conklin, and Gil Smith. Visit our 1890 Bayman’s cottage built for Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Beebe, and eventually their seven children. Experience the way a typical Bayman’s family lived in the nineteenth century. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy a day by the Great South Bay followed by a guided tour through the museum’s exhibits at 1:00pm!
