From slavery to emancipation, the Negro Spiritual served as a vessel of communication, empowerment, and inspiration, and helped a nation of people in bondage endure life. During the civil rights movement of the 1960’s, Negro Spirituals, as well as hymns and folk songs, became the soundtrack that fueled the movement and has continued to serve as an integral part of human rights movements through the years. “Songs That Brought Us Through,” a concert presented by June E. Townes & Gospera, celebrates and preserves the beauty and legacy of the Negro Spiritual, hymns, and folk songs, while exemplifying their continued relevance through the years and during current times. This is a 50-minute concert, followed by a reception with the musicians. Suggested donation for admission is $25.00
