The Disappearance Portraits at Cooper Hewitt

  • Details
  • Jonah Bokaer's The Disappearance Portraits, his only 2017 Solo work, is a live installation created in dialogue with Soundwalk Collective over many years of collaboration. The material contents focus on reverse migration in The Red Sea, a critical hypotenuse between Arab, African, and Middle Eastern neighbors.

In addressing trans-cultural migration and displacement issue in several iterative works over the years, Jonah Bokaer and Soundwalk have each attempted to distinguish migrants, from asylum seekers, from refugees, in a variety of specific geographical regions, calling attention to the changing landscape of the travel by sea, through choreography, and sound field recordings.
