The History of Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet

Details

The Alexander Smith and Sons’ Carpet Company was once the largest carpet manufacturer in the world, located mere blocks from the Old Croton Aqueduct in Yonkers. Join us for a talk on the history of this powerhouse company that once defined an industry and a city, employing more than a third of the workforce in Yonkers at its peak. Although the factory was closed in 1954 and the company moved south, from technology to philanthropy, the successes and contributions of the family and its businesses still resonate today. The talk will be delivered by local Yonkers historian and trustee of the Hudson River Museum, Angelique Piwinski. Light refreshments are served at 2:30 with the talk starting at 3. 2:30pm-4:30pm | Location: Dobbs Ferry | Free | Ages: All Ages
